Elizabeth Doub : A Farewell to Viterbo

It is hard to grasp that my time in Viterbo is coming to a close. In the four months I have been here, I have truly accepted it as my home and become comfortable with life here more than I ever could have anticipated. When I think back to my first week here, it seems like a lifetime ago, even though I feel like the semester has gone by so fast. When I first arrived, I was struck by all the differences from home, but now I barely notice them. It is true that my life is very different here, and I will surely face difficulties when I return home at the changes I will have to make to fit back into my old life, but there are also many things that have changed for me that I hope to keep different. For example, I have grown to love the slower pace of life in Viterbo. I feel less rushed and anxious now that I have gotten used to the feel of the town. While I found it strange at first, that everyone took a break in the middle of the day and that the town would fall silent on Sundays, I now appreciate the peacefulness. I hope to keep the peacefulness of Viterbo with me when I leave, and to not rush when I don’t need to. There are so many other parts of Viterbo I will miss as well, like the medieval streets and the beautiful fountains and piazzas. There is so much beauty and art everywhere and I will miss not being able to wake up to such lovely scenery everyday. I will also miss smaller aspects of life here, like the cafés. I will miss getting cappuccinos and pastries every morning and spending hours in the relaxing cafès. I will miss my apartment and walking to school, and of course the lovely people I have met and the friends I have made here. There are so many things to miss that it is hard not to be sad, but I am also grateful for the time I’ve spent here. While I bid farewell to Viterbo for now, I am grateful that I have changed and learned so much and that I can take what I have learned with me when I leave. I will keep the memories with me, and I hope to keep the good changes and new perspectives in my life that I’ve gained here. And, of course I’ll have to come back and visit someday.
