A visit to Rome, Florence and Bologna where graffiti and works of art scream: “Peace”

di Riley Bowen*

manifestazione pace in Palestina
I write this with a heavy heart as I call upon the desperate need for peace. Last week I visited Rome, Florence and Bologna. Throughout these three great Italian cities you can see graffiti and works of art supporting a ceasefire such as #nowar. So many precious lives have been lost so far in the war between Palestine and Israel. So many innocent children have fallen victims of the brutality of this war that has been going on for decades. Gaza has even announced the cancellation of the school year because most of the children population has lost their lives amidst this gruesome war. So much blood has been shed and it must come to an end, I am beyond words with the pain I feel for all the families and loved ones of those who have been lost. And my heart rests with the ones that are no longer with us, their lives are meant so much more than this war and I think it’s extremely important we honor these lives and do all what we can to bring peace.
I encourage you to read
Silenzio per Gaza” di Mahmoud Darwish
This section of the poem was repeated throughout a protest against the war held in Rome.
“…Gaza non è la città più bella.

Il suo litorale non è più blu di quello di altre città arabe.

Le sue arance non sono le migliori del bacino del Mediterraneo.

Gaza non è la città piú ricca.

(Pesce, arance, sabbia, tende abbandonate al vento, merce di contrabbando, braccia a noleggio.)

Non è la città più raffinata, nè la più grande, ma equivale alla storia di una nazione…..”

No war
