Elizabeth Doub: At the annunciation fair

di Elizabeth Doub

This past Monday, March 25th was the feast of the Annunciation, a religious holiday that celebrates the annunciation of Christ. It is a very old tradition, and every year in Viterbo, they celebrate by filling the streets with shops and food stands. The streets and Piazzas are all filled with people selling various items from clothes to books to cookware. It’s yet another city-wide festival that brings everyone outside together. I made sure to go as soon as my class was over to check out the scene. One of the first stands I stopped at was a place selling Sicilian pastries. They had cannoli and all different types of biscotti. I of course had to try the cannoli, and it was excellent. I moved on , trying to save money before I got to the end. Another food item they sell is Panini con Porchetta, a popular street food consisting of a sandwich with sliced pork meat. It can be on its own or with other ingredients such as cheese and tomato. I tried a plain one, and it was very good. I kept walking, maneuvering through the maze of people, and coming across new surprising sights at every turn. There was a man selling birds and rabbits in cages and plenty of jewelry stands. I loved trying on all the different rings and bracelets. After getting a lot of walking in and seeing all I could see, I of course had to get gelato from one of the shops that have recently opened for the season. I spent a while at the fair, because it went on all morning, and took in the atmosphere. It always surprises me how festive and full of life the traditions in Viterbo are, and I am glad to have witnessed and learned about so many of them I am definitely looking forward to see what other festivities the spring season brings.
