Something I was excited to explore in Viterbo was the local grocery store and markets. I always like to check out the market when I go to a new place because it reveals what the locals eat and a lot about their culture as well.
Viterbo has a few supermarkets and also, a lovely open air market on the weekends, where they sell fresh fruits and vegetables in the town square. I was very impressed by the open air market! The produce there is delicious and is sold at a very reasonable price. In addition to food, they also sell various items such as clothes, shoes and jewelry. Going to the market has become one of my favorite weekend activities.
There were definitely some differences I noticed between shopping for food at home and in Viterbo. For example, in my hometown there is sometimes a farmer’s market, but it is only in the summer and does not happen every week. Also at home, I usually got to the grocery store once a week, and buy everything I need for the week at once. Here, I have noticed that people tend to buy fewer groceries and go more often. There are different products being sold as well. There is much more variety of pasta. The store I shop at has two whole isles dedicated to pasta. I have definitely learned to make it a staple of my diet. There are some things that are difficult to find here that I eat at home, like peanut butter. American super markets have many different brands of peanut butter, however I have only been able to find one kind of it here. I would say that is the food I miss most from home. I have learned to adapt my shopping habits while I am here; I definitely buy more fruits and vegetables because they are affordable, and I’ve learned to make many new pasta dishes as well. I recently made pasta from scratch (pictured) thanks to my cooking class, and it was certainly not hard to find the ingredients in the market when I tried it on my own. It was a lot of fun! I can’t wait to try out more Italian dishes.
